The Outback

The Outback is a whole lot of “not much to see from the highway at 80mph.”
(Notable exceptions: wild camel, huge termite mounds)
The Outback
For the geographically inclined, we drove from Alice Springs to Townsville in two days. The night was spent in Mt. Isa (World’s leading lead mine… just great… don’t drink the water)

Major hazards while driving across the great expanse of land between towns in central Australia:
Drowsiness
Other drivers (who may be drowsy)
Kangaroos (active at dusk, and early morning)
Road Trains (Lots of metal, moving really fast, in the opposite direction.)

The longest one of these we saw had FOUR trailers on it, and it was hauling gasoline…
